The Importance of Communication Skills for engineers

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.” Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

My opinion:-

As an engineer, we are the subject matter experts in our field of work which is more of technical and hands on approach.

As a result, it brings difficulty for us to explain verbally or through words well on what we exactly do on a daily basis.

This hence, gives the public little knowledge of what we do and the importance of our role that we play in the world.

It is important for us as engineers to enhance our communication skills to better explain what we do in order for the public to understand and value us more.
